Space: Organizing Places of Turkish Immigrant Film Festivals in Germany—Reshaping Space, Identity, and Culture

  • Burcu Dabak Özdemir

摘要

This research delves into the complex, unstable, and multi-layered dynamics of space surrounding Turkish immigrant film festivals in Germany. It focuses on their impact on urban landscapes, with an emphasis on how these organizations contribute to the negotiation of Turkish immigrant identity and community within the German context. Through an investigation of festivals’ organization of place usage for drawing immigrants to city centers, this study explores not only the city experience of Turkish immigrants through spatial mobility but also how these experiences change the city fabric. The study employed participant observation and semi-structured interviews held during the International Frankfurt Turkish Film Festival and the Nuremberg Turkey-Germany Film Festival. The research claims that festivals empower Turkish immigrants with urban mobility while simultaneously offering heterotopic space for cultural expression.
