Future Perspectives on Cadmium Toxicity Research

摘要

Heavy metals are significant environmental contaminants, and their toxicity is becoming a growing concern for nutritional, evolutionary, ecological, and environmental reasons. Cadmium (Cd) is likely the non-essential heavy metal that has received the most research interest in soil science and plant nutrition due to its potential toxicity on human subjects as well as its relative mobility within the soil–plant system. Since the last few decades, Cd anthropogenic sources have increased drastically. It is an extremely toxic substance that is not necessary for the living creatures. It is a possible threat to plant and human health, as well as a hazardous contaminant in the environment, which can eventually cause agricultural issues and human diseases. Crop uptake and accumulation are the primary entry points for potentially harmful toxic metals into human and animal foods. Crops and other plants absorb Cd from the soil or water and may transport it in their roots and branches. Natural sources, industrial effluents, and human activities are all common causes of Cd contamination in soil and/or water. So, if the current trend continues, the implications will be more adverse. To prevent Cd toxicity, it is necessary to restore Cd-contaminated sites and dispose of Cd-containing objects properly. In this chapter, we will broaden our knowledge about overcoming the serious issue of Cd toxicity for sustainable agriculture and human health worldwide.
