The Role of Transposable Elements in Plant Development

The plant genome is significantly influenced by the presence and activity of mobile genetic sequences known as transposable elements (TEs). These sequences possess the ability to relocate and replicate within the host genome, contributing to both genetic variation and evolutionary processes. Plant TEs exhibit a significant diversity, from their modes of transposition and activity levels to their species-specific insertion preferences. This dynamism fuels genetic and epigenetic variation and shapes plant genome evolution through redundancy and chromosome rearrangements. TE activity exerts multiple effects on plant genomes, including gene disruption, de novo gene function through TE exaptation, and modulation of gene expression. By assessing TE activity, researchers can gain insights into how these mobile elements influence epigenetic landscapes, ultimately shaping gene expression patterns in economically important crops.
