Plants exhibit fascinating heritable epigenetic phenomena that transcend the boundaries of Mendelian inheritance. Epigenetic phenomena, which include paramutation, imprinting, and transgenerational epigenetic inheritance, allow plants to adapt and fine-tune gene expression across generations. They offer exciting possibilities for understanding and potentially manipulating heritable traits under challenging conditions. Paramutation could be harnessed to induce stable silencing of negative alleles, while imprinting could guide breeding strategies to optimize gene expression from parental lines. Moreover, transgenerational epigenetic inheritance holds promise for developing crops pre-adapted to future environmental challenges. By unraveling the molecular mechanisms underlying such phenomena, we can unlock novel strategies to improve crop resilience and adaptation, ultimately enhancing food security upon variable conditions.
