DNA Methylation, Histone Modifications, and Non-coding RNA Pathways

  • Luis María Vaschetto

摘要

The traditional view of inheritance dictated by DNA sequence has already been challenged by epigenetics. The new perspective suggests a “soft inheritance,” where environmental cues and developmental programs may leave lasting impressions on the epigenetic landscape through covalent modifications like DNA methylation and histone modifications, and the transmission of non-coding RNAs. These epigenetic marks can activate or deactivate in response to environment and persist across generations, influencing offspring phenotypes without altering the DNA sequence. Hence, epigenetic inheritance allows to reversibly adapt to changing environments without the need of waiting for the selection of genetic mutations, ultimately providing a versatile layer of flexibility in evolutionary fitness. By understanding epigenetic inheritance mechanisms, we can gain invaluable insights into crop development, stress responses, and molecular breeding.
