Our introduction to the first volume of this collection of chapters on the American right explored a number of features of contemporary American electoral behavior, political culture and party strategy. It argued that in a number of ways the context in which the Republican PartyRepublican Party and conservative politics now operate is very different from what it was sixty years ago and that this changed context has profound consequences not just for the dynamics of party competition but also for the resilience of the American system of constitutional democracy and the cohesion of American society.
