This chapter explores the character of contemporary Christian nationalism and the evolving relationship between religion and politics on the American right. It provides a brief introduction to the religious right which is now a well-integrated network of organizations and individuals and examines its evolution from the late 1970’s as a self-confident element of the conservative movement and of the Republican Party. The chapter examines different aspects of the religious right—its leadership, institutional structure and issue agenda—to show how they have changed over time and become more diffuse. The chapter argues that the religious right has transformed the character of the Republican Party and has also created divisions in the evangelical community. It analyses Christian nationalist ideas drawing on material from a major 2023 study of Christian nationalism from the Brookings Institution and the Public Religioun Research Institute (PRRI). Finally, it poses a set of questions about the future relationship between religion and politics in the United States considering both the critical perspectives of those concerned to preserve the integrity of religious causes and those anxious to preserve the electoral viability of the Republican Party.
