The introduction examines the evolution of the contemporary American right and the changing relationship of the Republican Party and the wider conservative movement. It charts the impact of the 1970s and 1980’s and the influence on neo-conservatism and the religious right as well as the shift towards a more populist style of politics with the advent of Donald Trump. It analyzes the different components of the American right including the role of the far right as represented by militia groups. The chapter explains the contributions to understanding of the American right in the several chapters.
