Soil Health Improvement and Pollution Remediation Using Biochar
摘要
Biochar has a huge potential as a material to remediate soil on a worldwide scale. Because feedstock are widely available and its surface exhibits favorable chemical and physical properties. This chapter highlights biochar chemical and physical characteristics and production techniques. Then the latest advancement in immobilizing and removal of heavy metals, carbon sequestration, and decrease greenhouse gases emission, organic pollutant removal and pesticides adsorption by biochar or composite biochar. At high temperature produced biochar can increase its surface area, hydrophobicity and microporosity so it is effectively managing organic pollutants. Biochar which is produced at lower temperature is more effective in eliminating inorganic pollutants by precipitation, electrostatic forces, and oxygenated functional groups. A secure and environmentally friendly use of biochar as a soil ingredient supplement towards the restoration of polluted soils is ensured by the identification of future research directions.
