Healthy and arable soil is critical to sustaining a healthy life. However, with recent development, urbanization, and population growth, various kinds of pollutants are routinely introduced to the soil environment. The presence of high levels of these soil pollutants can negatively affect soil health and crop productivity. Moreover, human exposure to these pollutants via varied routes can pose numerous risks. Nowadays, the key challenge is sustainable development to keep a balance between progress and environmental sustainability in a rapidly growing population scenario. Therefore, numerous techniques of soil remediation have received significant attention to remove contaminants and keep soils healthy and productive. Recently, the development and application of biochar and modified, regarded as a green and sustainable tool, to contaminated soils have received significant attention. Numerous studies have revealed the beneficial effects of biochar application on soil health and pollutant remediation. The addition of biochar to soil can bind nutrients, sorb pollutants, and increase crop production. This chapter mainly highlights the latest literature data (mainly from 2023 and 2024) regarding soil pollution by different types of organic and inorganic pollutants as well as the application of biochar to remediate polluted soils. Studies revealed that the efficiency of biochar to remediate polluted sites greatly depends on the properties of biochar, pollutants, and the soil. This chapter critically discusses the mechanisms of pollutant remediation by different types of biochars. Biochar has an excellent ability to minimize the bioavailable and leachable fractions of organic and inorganic pollutants in soil via various adsorption mechanisms.
