Data Analytics and Visualisation of Wastewater Monitoring via IoT Based Water Moving Vehicle

Effective wastewater monitoring plays a critical role in recycling and discharging reusable water back into the environment. Although some countries are rich with water resources, the clean water supply levels around the world have been rapidly decreasing due to the demand of water resources by rapid urbanisation and industrialisation. Thus, this research is motivated to provide a sustainable wastewater monitoring and management while addressing the challenges of decreasing clean water supply worldwide through the use of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies. IoT technologies is utilised to enhance wastewater monitoring by leveraging hardware connectivity and advanced data analytics. Patterns and correlations between the wastewater attributes were studied and subsequently, the potential reuse of the wastewater is determined. A mini water moving vehicle equipped with smart sensors and Raspberry Pi is built to collect wastewater attribute data. The collected data is stored in Cloud storage for analytical purposes. Analysed data and useful insights are then visualised via an analytical dashboard. Based on the analysed data, potential wastewater treatment solutions are proposed to recover the wastewater attribute levels to a desirable state so that the wastewater is safe to be released back to the environment. This study has successfully proven the potential practicability of real-time wastewater monitoring, analytics and visualisation to be applied into an operational environment.
