Brachystegia boehmii and Piliostigma thonningii seeds were assessed in a study conducted at the Botswana University of Agriculture and Natural Resources. Ten treatments were included in a completely randomised design (CRB) experiments, which included nicking soaking in sulphuric acid for 15, 30, 45 and 60 minutes, submerging seed in boiling water for one, three and five minutes and hot water (allowed to cool for twenty-four hours). Seeds were allowed to germinate for 30 days in the laboratory. The obtained germination data were subjected to analysis of variance (ANOVA). B. boehmii seeds that were exposed to hot water (allowed to cool for 24 hours), sulphuric acid and nicking did not show a significant difference from their untreated counterparts. Lowest germination rate of B. boehmii was discovered in boiled seeds. In comparison to untreated seeds, Piliostigma thonningii seeds nicked and those treated with sulphuric acid showed significantly higher germination rates. The germination of P. thonningii seeds was not enhanced by boiling and hot water. The outcome of this study showed that B. boehmii has a permeable seed coat and the outcome is opposite for P. thonningii.
