Towards Mixed Reality as the Everyday Computing Paradigm: Challenges and Design Recommendations
摘要
Mixed reality (MR) technologies have the potential to transform how we interact with computers in everyday life. However, several challenges must be addressed to enable widespread adoption of MR as an everyday computing paradigm. This paper presents an exploratory study that used a functional MR application as a technology probe to investigate users’ expectations and frustrations with MR for daily use. Through diary studies, usage data analysis from 1,052 users, and interviews, the authors identify key challenges like lack of established mental models, integration issues with non-MR workflows, and needs like more immersive content, content customization tools, and voice interfaces. Based on the findings, the authors propose design recommendations for mixed reality interfaces that adapt to the user’s environment and tasks.
