Investigating Ephemeral Messaging Apps on iPhone 14: Insight into Signal, WhatsApp, Snapchat, Instagram, and Confide

In a post-Edward Snowden world, where concerns about government censorship and covert surveillance have come to the forefront, the necessity for secure communication is paramount. Ephemeral chat apps have emerged as essential tools, designed to offer both robust protection and discreet interactions. Employing sophisticated encryption techniques and self-destruct mechanisms, these applications present formidable challenges to various entities, including authorities, parents, guardians, educators, and law enforcement agencies. Their once-effective capability to monitor unlawful activities or inappropriate exchanges has encountered significant impediments. This study focuses on five popular ephemeral messaging apps: Snapchat, Signal, Instagram, Confide, and WhatsApp. Two methodologies are used: Phase I involves data migration from a 1st generation iPhone SE to an iPhone 14, with subsequent analysis using Cellebrite. Phase II entails direct communication between devices, followed by chat message extraction and analysis from the iPhone 14. The paper discusses experimental outcomes, exploring law enforcement tools’ effectiveness and ephemeral apps’ capacity to resist data recovery of deleted content and digital traces.
