Privacy and Security of Mobile Banking: A PRISMA-Centric Review of Android Finance Applications

The research examines the privacy and security of mobile banking applications within the fast-evolving financial technology sector. It examines the various vulnerabilities and privacy concerns that both online banking application individuals and financial institutions face due to the increasing reliance on these applications for everyday financial transactions. The study systematically reviews n = 37 mobile applications identified from the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) search criteria, The analysis methodologies included a static and dynamic analysis and identified a significant number of potential vulnerabilities (2157 in total) categorized by risk level. The findings highlight potential security threats that could compromise sensitive user and financial institution data. We also discuss evolving data privacy policies within mobile applications and highlight potential covert data collection methods that pose risks to consumers’ privacy without their awareness.
