Early-Stage Detection of Alzheimer’s Disease Using MRI Scans with Deep Learning

Alzheimer’s disease is a neurological sickness that damages the brain and memory functions and progresses irreversibly. The brain begins to shrink with Alzheimer’s disease, and over time, dementia develops as a result. It typically takes between 2.8 and 4.4 years following the onset of the first clinical signs for dementia to be diagnosed. All currently available pharmacologic therapy (drugs) for Alzheimer’s disease are ineffective. The only way to prevent Alzheimer’s disease is by early identification and timely treatment. This study suggests using MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) pictures and deep transfer learning models to identify the various phases of Alzheimer’s disease, including “Very-Mild-Demented,” “Mild-Demented,” “Moderate-Demented,” and “No-Demented.” By applying data preprocessing and augmentation techniques, the model is able to identify the appropriate class of Alzheimer’s disease.
