With the revolution of 1848/1849, the challenges of modernity hit the Habsburg monarchy with their full force. The newly established regime therefore launched an ambitious reform course, which was flanked by a strong military component. Military architecture was deployed not only as a powerful means to visualize the new ideas but also as one of the most efficient instruments for realizing the elite’s vision of a modern state. This chapter shows how the new elite attempted to meet the challenges of modernity with hitherto established approaches, before the end of the 1850s signaled the beginning of a new age in military technology and strategy.
