This chapter analyzes the concepts developed and pursued by future German Emperor Wilhelm I (1797–1888) for transforming the Hohenzollern Monarchy into a ‘German national monarchy’ before his appointment of Bismarck as prime minister in 1862. Shedding light on the development of this particularly consequential—and in the end effective—political project of an often historiographically marginalized monarchical actor, it argues that German unification under Berlin’s leadership was only possible because Wilhelm had long before made this idea central to his plans and efforts of stabilizing and modernizing the Prussian throne. This chapter explores how he became instrumental in fundamentally changing the nature of the Hohenzollern Monarchy by linking dynastic and national interests.
