The Emperor’s Hungarian Gambit: How Franz Joseph Transformed from Tyrant to King
摘要
One of the great mysteries of Hungarian history is how, in the space of a few generations, King Franz Joseph went from being perceived as a despised teenage tyrant to a beloved grey-haired old king. The strange transformation of his reputation between 1848 and 1916 obviously had much to do with the modernization of society on the one hand, and with the modernization of the Habsburg dynasty itself on the other. The aim of this chapter is to examine from a security perspective the strategies, ideas and practices that Franz Joseph and the Hungarian elites developed during their long and complicated reconciliation process.
