The Co-operative College represents an important and unique attempt to bring together forms of education and learning that have been kept separate in wider educational institutions and practices. Social education that focused upon the place and purpose of the co-operative movement within broader social, political, economic and political contexts was a staple of co-operative education for many years. Management and secretarial education was an example of technical learning especially for employees of the movement. Additionally, perhaps the most successful element of the College was the education and training for overseas co-operators that spanned the years of colonialism and independence. As a form of ‘multi-lateral’ institution, it made connections between all these areas of provision. Its vision of co-operation as an educational force based upon a distinctive set of values and principles remains significant.
