摘要

The Analyst, a significant addition to nineteenth century mathematical literature, was the first American mathematical journal to complete a decade of uninterrupted publication. Edited by Joel Evans Hendricks and published in Des Moines, Iowa, the journal catered to those who wished to read interesting mathematics and learn about recent advances in statistics and astronomy. A popular component was a department devoted to problems and their solutions. When ill health forced Hendricks to cease publication of the journal in 1883, it was continued as the Annals of Mathematics. We focus here on the origin of the journal, its editor, and its contributors.
