Conclusion

My study demonstrates that contemporary politics may be more complex than I expected. It seems to be more than an ascendancy of progressive liberal or neoliberal principles in hegemonic fashion. Rather, no matter whether presidents emphasize progressive homo economicus or neoliberal homo economicus, there remains in both perspectives a significant commitment to a latent homo economicus. In other words, and as I have termed the development, a heterodoxy with a market hegemon. The long-term implications of American presidential discourse are the subject of another dissertation. It may be that homo economicus is so embedded into liberal culture that presidents cannot avoid the embrace or the use of neoliberal language.
