Three key historical and contextual themes emerge from the present national curriculum for England in PE: healthism; assumptions about sport and an awareness of the social and cultural forces of influence. The first two themes relate to the behavioural philosophy, which views the body as an object to be controlled. The third theme adopts a constructivist approach, placing a focus on 'awareness'. An awareness of social and cultural forces relates to holistic education and specifically the socio-cultural approach to PE.
