The Meaning of ‘Education’ in ‘Physical Education’

This chapter introduces the concept of becoming ‘physically educatedPhysically educated’ and the holisticEducationholistic wellbeing and health benefitsHealthbenefits that it enables, again relating to whole child development. The terms ‘schoolingSchooling’ and ‘education’; ‘wellbeing’; ‘health’ and ‘health literacyHealthliteracy’ are defined and located within the broader physical education (PE) field. This chapter begins unpacking and explaining the complexity of the simple statement and book title; “Physical Education and wellbeing”. The question is asked, what is meant by literally being ‘physically educated’? At present there are many labels being used to represent the original nomenclature ‘physical education’— this is a result of varying approaches associated with child health.
