This chapter explores the impact of foreign and international trade union organisations on the Ethiopian labour movement. It focuses on the period of the most intense foreign and international involvement during the 1960s and 1970s. During this period, several foreign and international trade union organisations operated offices and employed staff in Ethiopia. Special attention is given to the relationship that developed between the Confederation of Ethiopian Labor Unions and three organisations: the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions, the African American Labor Center, and the Danish Confederation of Trade Unions. The chapter examines the different elements of these relationships, which included genuine and appreciated assistance, but also subversion and interference. The latter aspects ultimately led to the severance of ties. Finally, the chapter discusses the Ethiopian trade union confederation’s later engagements with various foreign and international trade union organisations.
