Interactive Industrial Design Applied to Modular Product Development

This paper presents the objectives and results of the EINSTUDIO project. The main goal is to establish a European culture of virtual industrial design study, taking into account and integrating various technological and pedagogical aspects that align with real-world design practices. The project promotes a transversal approach to industrial design thinking, firstly due to the diverse educational backgrounds of the participants (including degrees in robotics engineering and industrial design), and secondly, because of the multinational composition of the participants from Spain, Turkey, and Portugal. The project demonstrates how collaborative efforts have enhanced students’ understanding of industrial design. These teams have focused on developing innovative products, considering materials, production methods, and suitable mechanisms. Moreover, the objective is to humanize industrial design solutions by aligning them with economic and social considerations. The project was implemented in two phases, the first phase was related to the design of furniture and interior fittings and the second phase was related to the design of manually operated objects. The modular design ideas focused on; emergency sanitary modules and medical items, humanitarian shelter/home items, modular workstations/offices, modules for scientific exploration in remote areas and survival kits, ecotourism hotel design modules and equipment. Through the project, a sustainable, multidisciplinary, and effective teaching approach has been established, resulting in the development of 11 equipped sustainable designs, some of which will be partially showcased in this work.
