Development and strategic planning plans often propose actions in urban areas in order to bring the services and facilities that are desired to be built closer to citizens and thereby reduce the carbon footprint generated by the movement of users. Furthermore, in this environment full of already constructed buildings, the control of their deformations and vibrations can be considered a fundamental factor in the process of sustainable construction during the construction phase of this new facility. Its objective is twofold: on the one hand, to ensure the heritage and existing patrimony, avoiding possible material damage to buildings and, on the other hand, minimizing the impacts of the construction work on the citizens that surround it. This article aims to reflect the evolution of the instruments and methodologies used in building control. Since measurement techniques based on conventional topographic and highlighting the appearance of new sensors such as inclinometers, vibrometers and accelerometers, which have made the monitoring process more complete. In this sense, the central axis of this article consists in defining the new measurement sensors in the complete monitoring of buildings surrounding a construction zone, studying the problems that arise, the challenges and limitations that they present. The conclusions and challenges that are defined are based on the experience with this type of sensors from the research group of Cartographic Engineering and Mining Exploitation of the University of Cantabria, making special mention of the case of the control of the radiology building of the Hospital of Basurto.
