This communication presents a case study where a proposal for the design of collective elements for different places in the city (library, neighbourhood association, university classrooms, etc.) is carried out through critical reflection from art, and the technical exercise from the discipline of design engineering with the aim of demonstrating that this type of work meets the values proposed by the New European Bauhaus. It is a technical-artistic proposal within the framework of the Mucho Más Mayo Art Festival in the city of Cartagena (Murcia, Spain), where the design of these objects is developed with the joint perspective of the artist Raquel Meyers and the students of the Degree in Engineering in Industrial Design and Product Development taught at the Polytechnic University of Cartagena. This analysis shows how the project works the main values of the New Bauhaus (NEB), as it addresses sustainability (redesigning elements already in disuse), beauty in design processes, working with citizens, and its inclusion in the design through methodologies such as Design Thinking. This example of application is evaluated through an analysis methodology based on the “NEB Compass”, where values are estimated in each of its conceptual axes, and in its transdisciplinary values such as participatory process, multilevel commitment and transdisciplinary approach. The present analysis allows us to demonstrate that the incorporation of art in technical careers offers a complete perspective to address the values of the NEB, and vice versa; and that the artistic proposals complement each other towards beauty, inclusion and sustainability from the perspective of technique. This union is also complemented by the participation of citizens, which is where the scope of the NEB values is completed.
