Characterization of Elastomers Used in Seatback of Wheelchairs Dedicated to Paralympic Athletes

This research centers on studying elastic bands utilized in the seatback of a wheelchair specifically designed for a Paralympic athlete. Various elastic bands were examined, and a series of tests were carried out to assess their characteristics. Our key finding indicates that the stiffness of these bands is influenced by their initial position on the test bench. An inverse relationship was observed between the stiffness of the bands and both the length of the upper segment and the overall length of the band. The theoretical model proposed in our study is consistent with the experimental results, affirming its applicability in determining the mechanical behavior for different types of bands. This study provides valuable insights into the behavior of elastic bands in wheelchair design for Paralympic athletes, contributing to the optimization of performance and comfort.
