This chapter offers an analysis of the little-known satirical novel Mo Gbé. Le cri de mauvais augure (1991) by Beninese author Moudjib Djinadou. In this work, the protagonist Mogbé, who attempts to increase his masculine cachet by smuggling drugs into France, is infected with HIV when he is raped in prison and is subsequently deported back to Benin, where he is labeled homosexual and shunned by society. As a sort of latter-day, African Candide, Mogbé’s ordeal presents a satirical critique of the construction of hegemonic Beninese masculinity through purchasing power and heterosexual conquests, while also inverting the stereotypical view of AIDS in the Global North as a disease of African origin.

摘要
