Le rêve de devenir footballeur: Young Male African Migrants Pursuing the European Football Dream in Le ventre de l’Atlantique (2003) by Fatou Diome and Loin de Douala (2018) by Max Lobe
摘要
Analyzing the novels Le ventre de l’Atlantique (2003) by Senegalese author Fatou Diome and Loin de Douala (2018) by Cameroonian writer Max Lobe, this chapter discusses how masculinity is shaped, constructed and differentiated through football, which represents a dream of economic sufficiency and fame that can be pursued through migration to Europe. This movement is imagined as a masculine endeavor that leads to the contestation, (re)definition or (de)valuation of masculinities as male characters encounter harsh realities of migration or move across spaces.
