This chapter discusses how the international Argentine football stars Lionel Messi and Diego Maradona embody a narrative of South American masculinities, representing heroic heterosexual males who migrate to new territories and risk everything in search of social status. Citing cultural products such as songs, films, documentaries and social media, the author explores, from a perspective informed by cultural semiotics, how Maradona and Messi became global agents by establishing new imaginaries of the heterosexual footballer and how these circulate and dominate in social spaces and networks in the Global North.
