This chapter explores the staging of masculinities in the Congolese Sape movement, a transnational subculture centered on male fashion and movements between the Congo and France. With an interdisciplinary perspective informed by sociology, anthropology, fashion and literary studies, the author discusses the (de)constructions of masculinities inherent in the Sape movement and in Congolese-French author Alain Mabanckou’s novel Bleu-Blanc-Rouge (1998).
