Probiotics and prebiotics have gained significant attention in recent years for their potential role in promoting gut health and overall well-being. Probiotics are live microorganisms that, when consumed in adequate amounts provide lots of health benefits. These beneficial microorganisms colonize the gastrointestinal tract and play a vital role in maintaining a diverse and balanced microbial community. Prebiotics, on the other hand, are non-digestible dietary fibers that serve as food for probiotics to promote growth and activity. Numerous studies summarized that probiotics and prebiotic offer numerous health benefits such as immunomodulation, improved digestion, enhanced nutrient absorption, and even a positive impact on mental health for individuals with diabetes. Additionally, they have been investigated for their potential in managing conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease, and metabolic disorders. Most of the ongoing research focuses on comprehending the mechanisms of action of specific probiotic strains or combinations that provide the greatest health benefits and aid in diabetic maintenance. Clinical studies have examined the optimal dosage and their efficacy in various diabetic population. This chapter presents a comprehensive overview of probiotics and prebiotics, their effects on gut health in combating diabetes as well as other potential applications, by extracting recent research findings and clinical studies.
