Climate Change-Food Security-Health Nexus in Africa

All over the world, great concern has increased over climate change impact on food security and its associated effects on health, as climate change is already creating significant threat to agricultural sector especially in developing nations. This work is designed to identify the changes in climate over a period of time, identify food security challenges in the region, and identify specific effects of climate change on food security and evaluate effects of food security on health induced by climate change. Tropical Africa is most often classified as a region extremely sensitive to climate change especially within the many poorer areas as a result of low capacity to cope effectively with its adverse effects. Climate change occurrence within this region constitutes significant threat to food security and human health, as its effects inevitably influence related element in a food supply chain. This paper used relevant literature and report from previous research in reviewing the impact created by climate change on food security and health in tropical Africa. Findings indicate that climate change is resulting in negative challenges in progress made in the agricultural sector, food security resulting to various forms of malnutrition. This paper recommends amongst others that all hands must be on deck to strengthen the capabilities of regions like tropical Africa to sustainably handle issues of climate change extremes and the inherent threat to food security.
