Planetary Health and Climate Change in the Anthropocene

This work examined the connections between planetary health and climate change in the Anthropocene, which we consider a geological event rather than an era. This classification emphasizes a more nuanced ‘picture’ of human agency, which provides inspiration for actions and societal mobilization to resolve the climate change crisis. The latter emerged from the effects of human activities on a planetary scale, that have been overwhelmingly negative since the Great Acceleration of the Anthropocene began, in the 1950s. Failing to address excessive consumption constitutes the main reason exacerbating present planetary crises. Consequently, quick environmental deterioration and resource exhaustion generate new problems and compounded crises that become more challenging to tackle. A search for strategies aiming at least to mitigate the deleterious effects determined by these crises constitutes the purpose of this work. Our quest for solutions capitalized on twentieth century holistic ideas and philosophies, while focusing on the role of land-based livelihoods, especially agriculture. We discovered that holistic solutions can be generated from sustainable epistemologies, that require holistic approaches and strategic reforms in education.
