Grossing of Genitourinary Specimens

Genitourinary gross specimens should be handled with care, as they are an essential part of providing excellent care to patients who have undergone genitourinary procedures. Obtaining an accurate microscopic diagnosis requires correct description and submission of genitourinary specimens/tissue sections for histologic evaluation. Managing these specimens is often a daunting task, especially for trainees; however, by understanding a few fundamental principles, one can develop a framework for approaching these cases. Presented is a stepwise approach to handling genitourinary gross specimens.
