Grossing of Bone and Soft Tissue Specimens

Bone and soft tissue surgery can produce an array of different specimens. From small hernia sacs to major resections of multiple different bones, this subspecialty is incredibly unique. Utilizing a bandsaw with a diamond blade is remarkably helpful when grossing bone but remember that bone needs to be well decalcified before submitting sections. Knowledge of the CPT codes for bone and soft tissue is necessary when grossing. Bone and soft tissue cover a large majority of the CPT codes and when tissue is decalcified, an additional charge is implemented. See Table 2.1 for CPT codes.
