Significance of Adipose Tissue as an Endocrine Organ

Besides its energy storage and thermoregulatory functions, adipose tissue is a multifunctional organ that plays an important role in maintaining metabolic homeostasis. In this introductory chapter, we aim to provide an overview of the endocrine functions of adipose tissue, tracing the evolution of our understanding from the historical perception of the tissue as a mere energy storage depot to its modern recognition as a complex and influential organ. Adipose tissue secretes a diverse array of signaling molecules that collectively contribute to the regulation of energy balance, glucose metabolism, and cardiovascular function. Knowledge of the physiology of adipose tissue in health and disease is particularly important in the context of the growing obesity epidemic and the consequent metabolic and cardiovascular complications that are a significant public health burden. With advancements in technology, our understanding of the physiology of this tissue is rapidly improving, leading to the development of novel personalized treatment options for metabolic and cardiovascular diseases. By delineating the complex endocrine functions of adipose tissue, this chapter establishes the foundation for further chapters that discuss these questions in more detail.
