Tracing the Journey of EAP

The growth of technology all over the world has led to a greater need for Academic English teaching. Implementation of English for Academic Purposes (EAP) programs in non-English-speaking countries is different from that in English-speaking countries. Those programs are done as pre-sessional or as short intensive programs before students pursue their regular studies in English-speaking countries. Whereas some universities outside English-speaking countries have implemented English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI) courses, where academic content is taught in English, further preparing students for the challenges of higher education in an English-speaking academic environment. It is a fact that EAP is separated from ESP, which offers more occupational or specific domains of English such as Engineering, Tourism, Nursing, or Medicine. ESP is divided into two: EAP and EOP. EAP includes more scientific content, whereas EOP includes more occupational content such as Engineering. The issue with EAP is to implement effective EAP programs according to students’ needs. However, sometimes this hasn’t been possible due to staffing, overload, or employer’s policy. EAP programs not only aim to improve language proficiency but also emphasize academic skills such as critical thinking, academic writing, research techniques, and presentation skills.
