Rainwater Collecting Systems for a Residential Development

To build rainwater harvesting systems for residential usage in a residential complex, this chapter presents an optimization-based method. The optimal seating, collecting, storing, and distribution of gathered rainwater are taken into consideration by the optimization model, which also considers the installation of pipes, reservoirs, and rainwater harvesting systems. The optimization model's goal is to meet domestic water demands while minimizing the total annual cost of freshwater, as well as the capital costs of catchment areas, storage facilities, and pumps, and the costs of pumping, maintenance, and treatment. An analysis of a residential development in Morelia, Mexico is provided in this case study. The city of Morelia is known for its difficulties meeting its water demands, particularly in the dry seasons. By employing the presented optimization technique, it is possible to use a rainwater harvesting system to meet a sizable portion of domestic water demands while lowering associated costs over the long term. Several scenarios are provided to illustrate the possible application of the presented model.
