Selecting Optimal Site for Biorefineries: A Focus on Environmental Sustainability Integration

摘要

An average biorefining supply chain has a significant effect on local water resources. There are indeed intricate connections between the processes of producing biomass, turning it into chemicals and fuels, using fresh water, and disposing of wastewater. An optimization approach for the design of a biorefining system that considers the interactions with the surrounding watershed is presented in this chapter. The utilization of fresh water and the disposal of effluent into the nearby watershed are given special consideration. The choice of feedstocks, the placement of planting locations and facilities for processing biomass, and conversion technologies are all taken into consideration by the optimization strategy. There are environmental and economic objectives. A case study of Mexico's central-west region is showcased. The findings demonstrate that it is possible to maximize water use and minimize discharge while also meeting watershed restrictions and making financial profits.
