In recent times, the move to adopting a smart and sustainable environment has been of great importance globally. Nations all over the world are on the race to achievable a sustainable environment and smart city. This has gradually been accomplished as countries are gradually integrating technologies into existing city infrastructures. This study focuses on the implementation of various technological tools that can be integrated into smart cities. These tools lead to a green and sustainable city. Hence, having features and strategies that ensure a clean and sustainable environment in the cities. The systematic literature review which covers 5 years from 2018–2023 is used in this study. This is to highlight the gap and different results obtained by various researchers in the field of green sustainable environment and smart cities. This was achieved using PRISMA-2020 diagram for analysis and evaluation of inclusion and exclusion criteria of papers that are best fit for the research. The most important finding of this study is that for to achieve a green and sustainable smart city, efficiency is vital and well as automation of processes. risky day to day activities can be automated which would lead to a reduction in manual labour. For a smart city to the green and sustainable, it begins from each unit of that smart city which is the individual household existing in the city. Asides integration of technology in the households, the amenities should also be connected and a relationship should be existing between each household and existing infrastructures over a network in the city. We hope that this study serves as a guideline to developers worldwide for the template and approach to achieving a sustainable smart city in the future.
