This study examines land use/cover changes in the Central Anatolia Region (Türkiye) between 1987 and 2022. The study area includes 13 provinces and covers about 151.000 km2 or 21% of Türkiye. Urban, agricultural, and industrial areas constitute a significant part of the study area. A number of lakes and wetlands, such as Tuz Lake, are also located in it. Previous research has shown that the Central Anatolia Region is threated by urbanization, agricultural intensification, and climatic changes. The main objective of this study is to determine land use/cover changes based on analysis of satellite imagery data. The satellite images used in the analyses were Landsat 5 and Landsat 8 imagery acquired in summers of 1987 and 2022. Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) was calculated to reveal land use/cover characteristics. NDVI ranges between +1 and −1, and as it approaches +1, plant density increases. As it moves towards −1, plant density decreases. In the analyses, the pixels with NDVI values <0, 0.2, 0.2–0.5, and >0.5 were assigned to the classes of water, bare soil, sparsely vegetated soil, and densely vegetated soil, respectively. In 1987, the majority of the region was covered by water and bare soils (about 72%). From 1987 to 2022, the area covered with sparsely and densely vegetated soil areas increased, while areas covered by water and bare soil decreased. The changes in land use/cover can be attributed to changes in climatic conditions and the intensification of irrigated agriculture.
