Public Perception of the Relationship Between Global Warming and Renewable Energy Among Middle School Students: A Case Study of Lefkoşa

Energy profiles around the world must shift from fossil fuel combustion to renewable power generation if carbon dioxide gas emissions leading to global warming are to be lowered. However, adapting the energy sector is only feasible and sustainable if the public opinion is approving of the costs, safety, effectiveness and sustainability of renewable energy practices, as well as their necessity to combat climate catastrophes. In this research, a survey prepared by Kılınç et al. (2009) is conducted on 383 middle school students in Lefkoşa to measure their knowledge and perception of the relationship between global warming and renewable energy. Results of interests included almost no linear relationship between the education level of participants’ parents and the environmental awareness of the participants, weak relationship between participants’ knowledge about global warming and their level of concern regarding it, and 55.3% agreement or strong agreement on the idea that renewable power plants can provide sufficient electricity without the need for additional energy generation methods.
