Nanomedicine’s Transformative Role in Advancing Cancer Treatment

Nanoparticle-based medicines have emerged as promising cancer therapy techniques, providing tailored administration, increased efficacy, and lower systemic toxicity than conventional therapies. This book chapter summarizes the most recent studies on advanced nanoparticle-based cancer therapies, with a focus on their efficacy and wide range of applications. We begin by explaining the rationale for nanoparticle-based techniques, emphasizing their capacity to cross biological barriers and selectively accumulate in tumour tissues using passive and active targeting mechanisms. Liposomes, polymeric nanoparticles, and metal nanoparticles (e.g., gold, iron oxide) are discussed for their distinct features and capabilities in cancer therapy. The chapter also deals with the current advancements in nanoparticle engineering, such as surface changes, active and passive approaches for better targeting and controlled drug release techniques. We investigated the advantages of nanoparticle based formulations in pre-clinical and clinical trials as well as addressed their ability to improve therapeutic outcomes across various cancer types. Furthermore, the safety profile and translational potential of nanoparticle-based cancer treatments are evaluated critically, with a focus on biocompatibility and pharmacokinetics. This chapter seeks to provide a comprehensive resource for researchers and clinicians working on the development and deployment of advanced nanoparticle-based therapies for cancer treatment.
