Some places are, or have a propensity to become, hallowed ground. John Ruskin gravitated toward such places throughout his life. His sense of place was profound. The restoration of Brantwood over the last thirty years has helped students of Ruskin to understand the deliberate steps Ruskin took to shape his house and surrounding estate as a holistic manifestation of his ideas. At Brantwood, he created a home that was an instrument, workshop, and research base for his work in the wider world. In the process he also created somewhere that was the symbolic expression of his own devotional spirit, a place which became and continues to be, for many, hallowed ground. Understanding Ruskin’s actions at Brantwood offers insights into the relationship between place making and key Ruskin themes such as the Picturesque, the Law of Help, Composition, and J. M. W. Turner. Brantwood has never been easy to reach, but today it attracts upwards of 40,000 souls a year. The Brantwood estate works closely with contemporary artists and, in addition to its historical displays, hosts a busy creative program. The estate offers lessons to us in relation to environmental stewardship and seeks to inspire the agency of the individual.
