Austria, the Metternich , and the Polish Question Until 1831

The historical tradition of Polish-Austrian relations, along with the fact that Czartoryski’s diplomacy was not the first in the history of the Polish or Polish-Lithuanian state to seek support from the Viennese court and to do so in conjunction with a hypothetical bid for the Polish throne, underscores the undeniable geopolitical necessity to negotiate with Austria and attempt to secure its support. At this point in the discussion, it would therefore be enlightening to examine how the foreign policy of the Austrian Empire approached events in the territory of the former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. After all, the involvement of Austrian foreign policy in the so-called Polish question until 1831 was among the most significant external factors in shaping reflections on the Austrian Empire later in emigration.
