The Agency in the Austrian Empire: Hôtel Lambert’s Unfulfilled Goal

International relations were not the only arena in which the plans and ideas of Hôtel Lambert intersected with the policy of the Austrian Empire. After all, there was no real interaction in this area, as the talks, negotiations or the preparation of various memoranda and documents always concerned only the political representatives of Western countries.Nevertheless, the place where the activities of the Hôtel Lambert could come into direct contact or even confrontation with the Austrian interests was the operation of the network of agents that Czartoryski and his faction had been gradually establishing de facto since the early months of emigration.  In a letter to his homeland in 1833, Czartoryski emphasized the pressing need to establish permanent and firm correspondence between all parts of the former Poland and the emigration, with further articulation that this necessity extended beyond the territories of the former Commonwealth, requiring residents capable of regular communication with the emigrants to be placed in Berlin, Dresden, Prague, and Vienna.
