Conjunctival Tumors: Surgical Techniques
摘要
A variety of tumors affect the conjunctiva and cornea, ranging from benign growths to malignant neoplasms. Several types of conjunctival neoplasms originate from or involve the limbus region and extend into the cornea. Therefore, surgical techniques involve excision of both corneal and conjunctival tissues. In order to plan the appropriate surgery, a detailed preoperative evaluation is essential with a focus on correctly identifying the tumor and noting the extent of the growth. Several aspects of the tumor such as location, depth of involvement, and suspected diagnosis influence the surgical intent (incisional, map, or excisional), extent of surgical margins, choice of instruments, and use of adjuvant procedures. Small benign growths can be removed via simple excision. Malignant tumors should be removed with wide margins using a no-touch technique and supplemental absolute alcohol and cryotherapy. Ocular surface reconstruction techniques including primary closure and amniotic membrane placement can be selected based upon wound size, depth, and location.
